Sometimes an appliquéd stem might seem too heavy for a small leaf. To give the stem an elegant look and a feel of lightness, embroider the stem with a stem stitch. Use a single thread and embroider a second stem in a lighter color parallel to the first if you would like the stem to appear thicker.

Raised stem stitch: Another beautiful embroidery stitch is the raised stem stitch. It is worked from a base of straight stitches upon which rows of stem stitches sit. I used a single strand of variegated embroidery floss to create the design on the shoe in Ruby Slipper. Appliqué the shoe and mark the embroidery design on the fabric with a marking pen.
